Namun yang acap kali terjadi adalah takut terhadap resiko yang bakal muncul, hal ini disebabkan oleh kekerdilan jiwa untuk menghadapinya. Lalu timbullah ketakutan-ketakutan. Rasa ketakutan ini cuma menggiring seseorang menjadi pengecut. Dan akhirnya lari dari kenyataan.

Sifat pengecut dipandang sebagai sifat tercela yang tidak boleh dimiliki orang-orang yang beriman. Karena pengecut artinya ia tidak mau menanggung dan menghadapi resiko yang memang sudah menjadi konsekwensinya. Perilaku ini merupakan perilaku orang-orang yang setengah hati dalam keimanan, hanya ingin serba enak tanpa harus bersusah payah menghadapi masalah rumit. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « يُوشِكُ الأُمَمُ أَنْ تَدَاعَى عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا تَدَاعَى الأَكَلَةُ إِلَى قَصْعَتِهَا ». فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ وَمِنْ قِلَّةٍ نَحْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ « بَلْ أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ كَثِيرٌ وَلَكِنَّكُمْ غُثَاءٌ كَغُثَاءِ السَّيْلِ وَلَيَنْزِعَنَّ اللَّهُ مِنْ صُدُورِ عَدُوِّكُمُ الْمَهَابَةَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَيَقْذِفَنَّ اللَّهُ فِى قُلُوبِكُمُ الْوَهَنَ ». فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا الْوَهَنُ قَالَ « حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا وَكَرَاهِيَةُ الْمَوْتِ ».ابوداود

Karena izzah keimanan menuntun mereka untuk tidak takut dan gentar sedikit pun pada resiko Da’wah.

“Janganlah kamu bersikap lemah, dan janganlah (pula) kamu bersedih hati, padahal kamulah orang-orang yang paling tinggi (derajatnya), jika kamu orang-orang yang beriman”. (Q.S. Ali Imran: 139)

Dahulu yang membuat gentar musuh-musuh Islam adalah keberanian pejuang-pejuang Islam yang menghambur ke medan perang dengan suka cita karena pilihannya sama-sama baik yakni hidup mulia dengan meraih kemenangan atau mati syahid di jalan Allah. Oleh karena itu jangan tertipu oleh upaya orang-orang kafir untuk menghilangkan sifat syaja’ah. Sebab syaja’ah merupakan harga diri orang-orang beriman. Lantaran sifat itu sebulan sebelum kedatangan kaum muslimin orang-orang di Babylonia telah lari tunggang langgang mendengar umat Islam akan tiba di negeri mereka. Sampai-sampai Khalid bin Walid RA. menenangkan masyarakat Romawi agar tidak perlu teramat takut pada kaum muslimin karena kedatangan umat Islam hanya untuk menyerukan Islam dan mengajak mereka menghamba pada Allah SWT. semata.

Asy syaja’ah (keberanian) menjadi salah satu ciri yang dimiliki orang yang istiqamah di jalan Allah, selain ciri-ciri berupa al-ithmi’nan (ketenangan) dan at-tafaul (optimisme). Dengan demikian orang yang istiqamahlah akan senantiasa berani, tenang dan optimis karena yakin berada di jalan yang benar dan yakin pula akan dekatnya pertolongan Allah. Namun memang tak mudah untuk menjadi orang yang istiqamah atau teguh pendirian memegang nilai-nilai kebenaran dan senantiasa berada di jalan Allah. Bahkan Rasulullah SAW. mengatakan bahwa turunnya surat Hud membuat beliau beruban karena di dalamnya ada ayat (QS. Huud: 112) yang memerintahkan untuk beristiqamah,

“Maka tetaplah kamu pada jalan yang benar, sebagaimana diperintahkan kepadamu dan (juga) orang yang telah tobat beserta kamu dan janganlah kamu melampaui batas. Sesungguhnya Dia Maha Melihat apa yang kamu kerjakan.“

Rasulullah SAW. memahami benar makna istiqamah yang sesungguhnya sampai ketika Abu Sufyan bertanya hal terpenting apa dalam Islam yang membuatnya tak perlu bertanya lagi, beliau menjawab,

عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِىِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْ لِى فِى الإِسْلاَمِ قَوْلاً لاَ أَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ أَحَداً غَيْرَكَ. قَالَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ بَعْدَكَ. قَالَ « قُلْ آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ »

Demikian sulitnya untuk mempertahankan keistiqamahan di jalan Allah, dan demikian sulit pula untuk mewujudkan asy syaja’ah sebagai salah satu aspeknya.
