CENDEKIAWAN MUSLIM BIDANG MATEMATIKA

Islam telah melahirkan cendekiawan yang ahli dalam berbagai bidang. Temuan dari cendekiawan muslim tersebut sangat berpengaruh untuk perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dunia.
Di antara banyaknya cendekiawan muslim yang ahli dalam berbagai bidang, terdapat beberapa cendekiawan muslim dalam bidang matematika. Berikut beberapa cendekiawan muslim bidang matematika.
Tokoh matematika Islam banyak bermunculan sejak masa Daulah Abbasiyah (750-1258 M) hingga menjelang akhir abad pertengahan. Tak hanya di Arab dan Asia Tengah, sejumlah ilmuwan muslim di bidang matematika juga lahir dari tradisi Islam di Andalusia (Spanyol), pada masa pemerintahan Daulah Umayah 2 (756-1492 M).
Salah satu tokoh matematika Islam yang paling populer dan memiliki pengaruh penting adalah al-Khawarizmi. Ilmu matematika yang berkembang saat ini berutang kepada aritmatika dan algoritma yang dikembangkan oleh dia.
Nama sang ilmuwan sampai sekarang juga diidentikkan dengan bidang aljabar (ilmu hitung) berkat karya monumental: Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wal-muqabala (The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing). Karya Khawarizmi itu jadi pondasi penting aljabar era modern.
Selain Khawarizmi, ada banyak nama lain yang dikategorikan tokoh matematika Islam. Sejumlah ilmuwan muslim itu seperti al-Hajjaj, al-Jawhari, al-Biruni, al-Karaji, al-Battani, Abd al-Hamid ibn Turk, Banu Musa bersaudara, Omar Khayyam, al-Mahani, Abul Wafa’, hingga al-Qalasadi.
Mayoritas dari ilmuwan-ilmuwan muslim itu merupakan polymath (polimatik). Tidak hanya mahir di bidang matematika, mereka juga menguasai pelbagai bidang keilmuan lainnya.
Nama-nama di bawah ini baru sebagian dari banyak ilmuwan Islam ahli matematika. Berikut detail biodata 5 tokoh matematika Islam beserta sejumlah penemuan penting dan karya-karya mereka.
- Al-Khawarizmi
Nama Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi abadi hingga kini karena ia dianggap sebagai “bapak” aljabar. Khawarizmi masyhur sampai era modern berkat karya besarnya, al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisab al-jabr wal-muqabala. Buku yang menjadi pondasi pengembangan aljabar dan algoritma tersebut diterjemahkan ke bahasa Latin dengan tajuk Liber algebrae et almucabala pada abad 12.
Melalui buku al-jabr wal-muqābala, Khawarizmi mengembangkan trigonometri yang memuat fungsi sinus, kosinus, tangen, kotangen, juga algoritma, dan hitungan desimal. Dia pun mengembangkan konsep angka nol sebagai bilangan yang pada abad 7 dirumuskan pemikir India, Brahmagupta. al-Khawarizmi tercatat pernah menulis buku al-Jam‘a wal-tafriq bi-ḥisab al-Hind yang mengulas ilmu hitung di matematika India.
Hidup selama 780-850 M, Khwarizmi semula lahir di Khwarezm, daerah yang di masa lalu masuk kawasan Persia. Sekarang, daerah ini bernama Khiva dan menjadi wilayah Uzbekistan. Khawarizmi tumbuh semasa Harun al-Rasyid berkuasa. Penguasa Daulah Abbasiyah paling sukses itu dikenang sebagai pemimpin yang amat peduli pada ilmu pengetahuan.
Sang khalifah membentuk lembaga ilmu pengetahuan di Baghdad bernama Baitul Hikmah. Saat putra Harun al-Rasyid, al-Makmun naik tahta, lembaga perpustakaan legendaris itu berkembang semakin pesat. Di Baitul Hikmah, Khawarizmi bekerja sebagai ilmuwan dan penerjemah teks-teks Yunani. Dari sana, ia mendalami aljabar, geometri, hingga astronomi.
- al-Qalasadi
Abu Al-Hasan ibnu Al-Qalasadi lahir pada 1412 M di Bastah, Andalusia (Spanyol). Selain menekuni ilmu matematika, al-Qalasadi di tanah kelahirannya juga belajar ilmu hukum dan Al Quran. Setelah hijrah ke Granada, ia pun mendalami ilmu filsafat.
Qalasadi kemudian lama menetap di Afrika Utara dan Tlemcen, daerah di Aljazair dekat perbatasan Maroko. Di tempat ini, ia menekuni ilmu aritmatika beserta aplikasinya. Beberapa karya penting di bidang matematika lantas ditulisnya, seperti al-Tabsirah fi’lm al-Hisab (Klarifikasi Ilmu Hitung).
Sebelum wafat pada 1486, Qalasadi berhasil mendidik penerusnya, Abu Abdullah al-Sanusi. Nama terakhir menulis 26 karya matematika dan astronomi yang menjadi teks otoritatif di Afrika Utara.
Berkat al-Qalasadi, matematika saat ini mengenal simbol-simbol ilmu hitung modern. Al-Qalasadi menciptakan simbol-simbol aljabar memakai huruf Arab pendek. Simbol-simbol itu pertama kali dikembangkan pada abad 14 oleh ilmuwan Andalusia,Ibnu al-Banna, dan selanjutnya dimodifikasi oleh al-Qalasadi sehingga lebih mudah diaplikasikan.
Qalasadi memakai “Wa” (dan) untuk simbol penambahan (+), “Laa” buat pengurangan (-), “Fi” untuk perkalian, serta “ala” dalam pembagian (/). Dia juga memakai “j” sebagai simbol akar, “shay” untuk variable (x), “m” melambangkan kuadrat (X2), huruf “k” buat pangkat tiga (x3), dan “I” sebagai simbol persamaan (=).
- al-Battani
Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Jabir ibn Sinan al-Raqqi al-Harrani al-Sabi al-Battani lahir tahun 858 M, di Harran. Di Eropa, nama Al-Battani dikenal dengan sebutan Albategnius. Dia meninggal pada 929 M di Qar al-Jiss (sekarang wilayah Irak).
Al-Battani termasuk ahli astronomi dan matematikawan muslim pada abad pertengahan dengan pengaruh besar. Salah satu karyanya, Kitab al-Zij (al-Zij al-Sabi) yang ditulis pada awal 900-an M diterjemahkan ke bahasa Latin dengan judul De Scientia Stellarum atau De Motu Stellarum pada abad 12. Kitab al-Zij adalah karya al-Battani yang paling populer dan kerap disebut hingga kini.
Berkat penemuannya, saat ini kita bisa mengetahui bahwa dalam setahun ada 365 hari, 5 jam, 46 menit dan 24 detik (sumber lain menyebut 365,24 hari). Penemuan Al-Battani ini dianggap akurat sehingga membuat matematikawan Jerman bernama Christopher Clavius menggunakannya untuk memperbaiki kalender Julian.
Di bidang matematika, al-Battani punya banyak sumbangan untuk trigonometri. Dia menguraikan sejumlah rumus sinus dan cotangen secara sempurna. Misalnya, dia memecahkan persamaan sin x= acos x.
- Abu al-Wafa’
Muhammad bin Yahya bin Ismail bin al-‘Abbas Abu al-Wafa’ al-Buzjani (Abu al-Wafa’)lahir di kota Buzhgan (kini Torbat-e Jam di Iran), Khurasan pada 940 M (328 H). Setelah wafat di Baghdad pada 998 M, Abu al-Wafa’ dikenang sebagai salah satu tokoh ilmuwan muslim paling cemerlang di bidang astronomi dan matematika.
Karya-karya Abu al-Wafa’ di bidang astronomi dan matematika sebenarnya melimpah, tetapi banyak yang musnah. Di antara karyanya yang berhasil diselamatkan adalah Kitab al-Kamil. Buku ini diterjemahkan ke berbagai bahasa Eropa. Salah satunya diterjemahkan ke bahasa Prancis oleh Carra de Vaux pada 1892. Melalui al-Kamil, Abu al-Wafa’ memperbaiki kesalahan teori Ptolemeus mengenai gerak Bulan.
Di ilmu matematika, kontribusi paling penting Abu al-Wafa’ adalah untuk bidang trigonometri. Abu al-Wafa’ mengembangkan fungsi tangen dan menemukan metode untuk menghitung tabel trigonometri. Abu al-Wafa’ juga mengembangkan rumus geometri yang merupakan induk dari trigonometri. Salah satu penemuan dia, yakni pemecahan soal geometri dengan kompas.
Abu al-Wafa’ tercatat menulis beberapa buku panduan aplikasi teori geometri. Misalnya, al-Handsa (Geometri Terapan), Al-Kitab al-Kamil (Buku Lengkap), dan Ilm al-Hisab (Buku Praktis Aritmatika). Buku-buku itu menjelaskan cara baru menghitung segi empat dan persamaan tingkat empat, segitiga, lingkaran, dan bermacam bangun lainnya.
- Umar Khayyam (Omar Khayyam)
Abu al-Fath Ghiyat al-Din Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyam al-Nishapuri (Umar Khayyam atau Omar Khayyam) lahir di Nishabur, salah satu wilayah Khurasan (kini Iran), pada 1048 M (439 H). Semasa hidupnya, Omar Khayyam mengembara ke berbagai tempat, seperti Samarkand, Bukhara, Balkh, dan Isfahan.
Omar Khayyam yang meninggal pada tahun 1131 M merupakan seorang polimatik. Dia menguasai matematika, filsafat, astronomi, hingga sastra (puisi). Puisi-puisi sufistiknya yang tertuang dalam Kitab Rubaiyat bahkan populer di kalangan sarjana barat pada era modern.
Saat hijrah ke Samarkand, Omar Khayyam menulis sejumlah risalah aritmatika, aljabar, dan teori musik. Ia menulis karya-karya itu di bawah perlindungan Abu Tahir, seorang penguasa Qarakhanid Syams al-Mulk.
Di Samarkand pula, Omar Khayyam melahirkan salah satu karyanya yang paling terkenal tentang matematika, yakni Maqalah fi al-Jabr wa al-Muqabilah. Buku ini dinilai punya peran penting dalam perkembangan aljabar, selain karya al-Khawarizmi. Di kemudian hari, buku tersebut diterjemahkan ke bahasa Inggris dengan judul Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra.
Karya Omar Khayyam lainnya yang juga dianggap memiliki pengaruh besar adalah risalah bertajuk Fi Sharh Ma Ashkala Min Musadarat Kitab Uqlidis (Concerning the Difficulties of Euclid’s Elements). Melalui risalah ini, ia mengoreksi teori Euclid soal garis sejajar, serta menghubungkannya dengan teori perbandingan dan ukuran.
